Binding
Rug edges
Protect the edge of your rug from wear and unraveling with binding, serging or fringing. All are done by machine.
Binding:
A piece of material is wrapped and sewn around the edge of the rug
Gives a tailored, classic, clean appearance
Least expensive rug edging (if standard ¼-⅜”; however, more expensive option is wide border binding)
Typically similar color to rug color
Vast selection of materials available for binding
Material chosen depends on the type of carpet selected and aesthetic look you desire. Inexpensive material is polyester. More expensive is cotton or sisal wide border binding.
Serging:
A continuous string of yarn is wrapped around the edge of the rug
Typically ⅜”
More expensive than standard rug binding
Appears handsewn, but is not
Can hide imperfections of an uneven rug edge
Less color options than binding
May draw eyes to the edge of the rug
Yarn can ‘sprout’ and create a bald spot
Fringing:
More expensive than serging and binding (with the exception of wide border binding)
Hard to vacuum as fringe can get stuck in vacuum
Fringe can easily stain or soil and is hard to clean
